Consumer Price Index

The Consumer Price Index for the Municipality of São Paulo is the most traditional indicator of the evolution of the cost of living of families in São Paulo and one of the oldest in Brazil. It began to be calculated in January 1939 by the Statistics and Documentation Division of the Municipality of São Paulo.

In 1968, the responsibility for the calculation was transferred to the Institute of Economic Research, linked to the Department of Economics at USP, and later in 1973, with the creation of Fipe, to this institution. It estimates the variations in the cost of living for families with a family income between 1 and 10 times the minimum wage. Check Indices and Indicators at FIPE.

The National System of Consumer Price Indexes – SNIPC performs the continuous and systematic production of consumer price indices, having commercial and service establishments, public service concessionaires and households as collection unit ).
